Chickens are among the most classic farm animals. Here are some facts about these popular animals that will ruffle your feathers.
- Cambodian forests might be the very first places on earth where chickens lived thousands of years ago. Around 7’000 years ago, also in this area of the world, people probably started to domesticate chickens.
- The scientific name for a chicken is “Gallus gallus
domesticus ”. Male chickens are called roosters, female chickens are called hens, and babies are called chicks.
- Chickens can dream, even in colours. So, don’t tell us they are happy when incarcerated in a small battery-cage.
- Chickens can live for about 5 – 8 years.
- As chickens age they lay bigger eggs but fewer than when they were younger.
- Our eggscellent chickens clearly know our farmer’s faces. They are sociable and can remember more than 100 faces of people or animals.
- There are about three times as many chickens as humans on the planet (around 25 billion).
- Chickens have prehistoric roots and are the closest living relative of the Tyrannosaurus Rex.
