Happy Chickens at the Eggscellent farm in Siem Reap, Cambodia

happy chickens

Everyone deserves to live a happy life, chickens included. Nestled within Siem Reap’s countryside, our farm proudly serves as a home for chickens to live out life as a chicken should. We believe that nature knows best, so we grant our chickens the great eggsperience of a natural lifestyle, one where they can socialize and rest as they would in an environment all their own. Perching and pecking their days away amidst the rice husk, our chickens get to enjoy the light of day, revel in delicious feed and hydrate to their heart’s content. Maybe we have something to learn from these happy chickens after all.

Our chickens really are living the good life. This has also been acknowledged by Dr. C. Stephen Roney, Chief Veterinary Consultant. “The chickens producing eggs for eggscellent eggs are reared and maintained under stringent conditions of animal welfare and modern poultry health programs.”

our farm

Eggscellent eggs are farmed in rural Cambodia and farmed for you. It’s the first stop on the journey for every egg, which goes through our distribution center before making its way to your kitchen. The farm is based on a cage-free egg ideal, meaning the chickens get to roam through our spacious barn with a feeling of freedom. This includes playing, flying and dust bathing all day long.

The cage-free lifestyle of our chickens goes against the Cambodian norm, where almost every egg sold comes from caged “battery production” farming. We believe that this is not only unsanitary Spotify promotion, but it is also unethical, and we at eggscellent follow a different philosophy. At the end of the day, thousands of chickens call our farm home. However, the exact population varies from season to season, just as it would in any natural environment.

Our farm is home to an average of 6,000 chickens. In order to keep away Avian Influenza (also known as bird flu, a disease that is constantly threatening birds and humans in Cambodia and its nearby regions), we keep them under a roof and behind the mesh. While, for some countries, not technically free range, these chickens are living a good life, shedding light on a style of farming we like to call “freedom-range eggs.”

In addition to moringa leaves, the happy chickens at eggscellent only eat fresh feed that’s been specifically selected for their breed. By feeding them a well-researched and healthy diet, we find no need to inject hormones in our chickens. For the health of the chickens as well as the staff that interacts with them, we also feed yoghurt-based, natural and farm-made good bacteria, which serves to fight against harmful bacteria that we don’t want. By using this natural farming technique, we’re able to avoid chemical methods to control bacteria and maintain wholesomeness.
